A 20-year-old man who caused an accident while speeding while intoxicated on a highway and killed his friend in the passenger seat has been sentenced to life in prison.

He covered up that his deceased friend was driving, and then he was caught in a police investigation.

Kim Mi-kyung, the presiding judge of the 4th Criminal Division of the Jeonju District Law, announced on the 29th that he sentenced Mr. A (4), who was charged with violating the Act on Aggravated Punishment for Certain Crimes (dangerous driving and manslaughter), to four years and six months in prison.

Mr. A was brought to trial on October 6 last year at about half past 7 a.m. on charges of driving a Porsche near Jeonju IC on the Hunan Expressway and crashing into a 10.26-ton truck ahead of him, killing his friend Mr. B, who was in the passenger seat.

Mr. B was seriously injured shortly after the accident and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he eventually died.

At the time of the accident, Mr. A's blood alcohol content was 1.4%, well above the level of a revoked license (5.0%), and it was determined that he caused the accident while driving at about 08 km/h while intoxicated.

Immediately after the accident, Mr. A fled to a nearby forest shortly after the accident and was discovered by the driver of the affected truck who was inspecting the scene.

He initially told the truck driver that he was driving, but after confirming that his passenger, Friend B, had died, he changed his mind, saying, "That friend drove it."

However, the police later detained Mr. A in the CCTV footage, saying that Mr. A was in the driver's seat and Mr. B was in the passenger seat, and that Mr. A's suspicion was justified under various circumstances.

"The defendant caused a traffic accident while he was unable to drive normally, resulting in the death of his passenger," the court said, noting that "the crime is very bad considering the blood alcohol content level at the time, the distance driven, and the circumstances of the traffic accident."

"The defendant came to this incident during the course of the crime," the court said, "and the sentence was determined based on a combination of all the sentencing factors that emerged in the case record and during the course of the defense."
