Thyssenkrupp's naval subsidiary wants to build submarines for India. With the signing of a letter of intent, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has laid the foundation for a possible cooperation with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited to participate in the planned submarine procurement of the Indian Navy, the group announced on Wednesday. The fact that the two companies want to sign the letter of intent had been reported by the F.A.Z. in advance.

The signing of the memorandum of understanding took place in Mumbai, India, in the presence of Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. If ordered, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems would be responsible for the construction and design of the submarines as well as for advisory activities, and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders for construction and delivery. The submarines would be built in India.

The Reuters news agency reported in February that Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems wanted to apply for a $5.2 billion submarine contract in India.
