In the trade war they are waging, German manufacturers have sought to win new customers by creating new niches. The strongest in this game are BMW and Mercedes. The first for example created the SUV coupe with the X6, but it is to Mercedes and the CLS that we owe the appearance of a genre in our opinion much more elegant: the 4-door coupe. The first generation was launched in 2004, and competitors surprisingly didn't rush to follow suit. The Audi A7 Sportback only arrived in 2010, while the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe will still be waiting until 2013.

Nests within the niche

The CLS enters its second generation in 2011. And the model stays one step ahead of the competition by opening a niche in the niche, since it now exists in Shooting Brake version. This version will not be extended for the third and current generation, launched in 2019. And this is perhaps where Mercedes began to muddy the waters too much, since this new CLS has since duplicated the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door, launched a year earlier. From next summer, the latter will have free rein, since the last CLS will come out of the chains during the month of August. The end of a nice story.
