In order to better distinguish the true from the false, TikTok wants to help its users distinguish authentic images from those made using artificial intelligence (AI). Bytedance's social network is currently considering a way to flag artificially designed videos, according to an article in The Information published on Monday.

This report would take the form of a "discreet" message that creators would be able to display on their content, on the same model as the "sponsored publication" badges, reports Numerama. This process is therefore based only on the honesty of content creators and TikTok has not indicated how it will verify the application of this measure.

Deepfakes already banned on TikTok... in theory

Similarly, it is not yet known whether this mention would concern videos entirely designed with AI or also those partially created with this technology. Asked about this novelty by the media The Wrap, TikTok made no comment, simply recalling that "trust is the basis of our community" and that it "was constantly working" to improve transparency on its platform.

Such a measure regarding videos made using AI would be a first. It is all the more essential on TikTok, where many deepfake videos circulate without moderation. It is on this social network that a fake song by Drake, in pseudo-duet with The Weeknd, shook the web in April.

TikTok is already trying to react to the phenomenon. Since March 2023, certain types of deepfake are banned from distribution and creators are obliged to specify when content was created via AI. The message on the video itself would be a new sign that the application, very popular with teenagers, wants to react by making more readable the journey of users on the platform.
