Since the European melodrama, in which Germany obtained that the automobile is finally not only electric after 2035, another subject is debated: synthetic fuels, which will still make it possible to sell thermal vehicles on this fateful date. Unnecessary energy expenditure for some, fuel reserved for rich supercar owners for others, all "anti" arguments are good. So what about the fact that Toyota, a popular manufacturer if there ever was one, is partnering with an oil giant for the development of such fuels?

Decarbonizing the existing fleet

It should be noted that Toyota's objective is not the same as that of Porsche, for example. The idea is to offer a synthetic fuel that is not completely carbon neutral, but that would reduce CO75 emissions by 2%. And this fuel will have to be cheap enough to be used by the hundreds of millions of combustion vehicles that will still be on the road after 2035. This huge existing fleet would thus also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We will repeat what we have already written here: if we are to believe those who tell us that technological advances will one day make the electric car as convenient as current cars, why not believe that progress will one day result in affordable and easy-to-produce synthetic fuels?
