• While sales of vacuum cleaners are good, Dyson announces its Gen5detect, a new model that will be launched in France on May 17.
  • With this device, the British firm also passes a milestone in terms of the size of the particles that will be sucked in, the Gen5detect can eliminate viruses.
  • Despite its obvious technical progress, the device, offered at 999 euros, will however remain very expensive.

Vacuum, eliminate, filter! It will be called Gen5detect and is announced as the most powerful vacuum cleaner launched by Dyson. It will also be the most expensive. Before its scheduled arrival in France on May 17, 20 Minutes was able to discover in preview the new champion of aspiration, determined to make a clean sweep of the slightest dust... up to viruses, with a level of aspiration still unmatched by the British manufacturer.

A new, more powerful engine

Dyson likes to think of itself as a "technology company." Founded in 1991, James Dyson's firm also seems to have set itself the divine mission of helping humans eliminate dust from the surface of the globe. And gives itself the means. The upcoming arrival of its new Gen5detect vacuum cleaner would be the result of four and a half years of development.

Nerve of war in the face of dirt, microparticles and now viruses that invade and pollute our interiors slyly: the engine of the aspi. Dyson would produce one every 10 seconds and still wants to innovate. The one that will equip the Gen5detect has nothing to do with its predecessors. In particular, it is 20% denser than the one fitted to the Dyson V10 vacuum cleaner launched in 2018. For each cm3 of the engine, 20% more power is produced. It would also, according to Dyson, be 125% more powerful than that of a V8 vacuum cleaner (2016).

The vacuum cleaner passes, viruses die

Displaying 262 air watts on the meter (air watts define the overall performance of the motor and allow to compare models), the Gen5detect would be a beast of burden. This real war machine will, according to Dyson, be able to suck, but also to eliminate using its HEPA filter, particles with a size of 0.1 microns. Ouch!

The V15, which until then was the most efficient Dyson vacuum cleaner (240 air watts), did not go beyond 0.3 microns. This micron thing doesn't sound like much, but the difference is highly symbolic. Explanations: allergens measure 0.3 microns. Viruses, they (but also diesel soot), 0.1 micron. A milestone has been reached. For comparison, the diameter of a hair is 70 microns...

400 grams more

In hand, the Gen5detect is a beautiful device with an emblematic design of the brand. Small problem: if its engine is now lighter, the vacuum cleaner is paradoxically heavier than the V15 it intends to surpass. And not just a little. This future model weighs 3.5 kg. That's still 400 grams more than the weight of the V15! "It's the drums," retorts Dyson France.

Offering an autonomy of 70 minutes, 10 minutes more in Eco mode than that of its predecessor, the battery of the Gen5detect has been reworked to help us clean up the house without needing to be recharged. Not sure that our arms hold as long, as the new vacuum cleaner with the weight offset on the handle ends up weighing. Still, its new design allows it to consume 50% less energy than the V15 when charging.

Particle counter

For its part, the trigger of the V15 has disappeared, in favor of an ON/OFF button located on the top of the machine and a little less practical for our taste. This is also where we find the screen of the Gen5detect, with a new interface. In addition to the autonomy available to the device according to the chosen suction mode, it displays in real time the quantity of particles sucked in and their size.

Not sure that this information captivates users of the future vacuum cleaner that is hard to imagine with their eyes riveted on the LCD screen. Unless they want to scare themselves, like by vacuuming the mattress of a bed, and they find, with supporting figures, that they sleep on a real breeding of microparticles. Funny, by the way: according to Dyson, 30% of French people consider mattresses to be the worst vectors of viruses, but... 60% never clean them! Try... just to see the result!

The laser for... scare yourself!

But if there is an element of Gen5detect that scares ... It's his laser brush! Incorporating a green light with doubled intensity, it immediately makes you aware of the state of our tiles and carpets. Leveling the ground over 30 cm, a light beam reveals in addition to the small waste visible to the naked eye, clouds of invisible particles with which it is sprinkled. Enough to encourage us to a more applied cleaning and to iron several times if necessary on the same area to make room for clean. And good point: the new hose of the Gen5detect incorporates a long nozzle. This is a first for the brand, which until then used to multiply accessories. It is thus possible to go from the suction of the floor to that of a staircase, or to the surface of a piece of furniture without excessive manipulation: it is enough to unclip the bottom of the pipe so that the nozzle appears and can be used.

Launched on May 17, the Dyson Gen5detect will undoubtedly be the most efficient Dyson broom vacuum cleaner from the British brand. It will be supplied with its motorized micro brush, soft brush, long nozzle (built-in) and wall mount. We will be sure to test it soon. But it will also be the most expensive: 999 euros, or 250 euros more than the Dyson detect absolute! The price of technology? Probably. Perhaps also that of a leading brand. But it's still starting to be very expensive to clean up...
