The director of the national karate teams, Ahmed Salem Baselaib, confirmed that first place is a legitimate goal for the male and female national team players during their upcoming participation in the first Gulf Youth Games.

Baslaib told Emirates Al-Youm: “The goal of the karate team’s participation is to compete on the podium, whether in individual competitions or at the team level, as the team’s roster includes promising stars.”

He explained: “One of the names nominated for gold is the talented Sheikha Al-Yafei, player of Shabab Al-Ahly Club, ranked 13th in the world in her age category, and who succeeded last September in grabbing the West Asian gold, before gifting the UAE and the Arabs last November the first silver medal in the history of the Asian Championships within Individual kata competitions for junior women.

He added: “The list also includes Rashid Khalil, who is considered one of the most prominent candidates for the gold (kumite) in the weight category under 61 kilograms. Two athletes, Malak Abdullah Al-Hajj and Khadija Al Jasmi, who were previously crowned in the Asian Kumite Championships, are also participating in the same competition (kumite). Talented player Ali Saleh, Asian junior bronze medalist.”

He concluded: “Most of the male and female players participating in the course represent the future nucleus of UAE karate, and they aspire to complete the path of achievements.”

Regarding the stages of preparing the team, Baslaib said: “22 players, both male and female, participated in the first gathering, which extended over the past two days, Friday and Saturday, at the Sharjah Club hall, and included three training sessions, and the matter will be repeated over the coming weeks, before all players attend a camp before the start of the team.” The course is in days.
