Dembélé Wonku returns to France squad

Strikers Christopher Nkunku and Ousmane Dembélé returned to the France squad called up by coach Didier Deschamps today for the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Gibraltar and Greece on 16 and 19 June. Real Madrid full-back Verlan Mendy is also back in the world champions' runners-up squad.

Nkunku, the Bundesliga's top scorer this season with RB Leipzig (16 goals in partnership with Werder Bremen striker Niklas Volkrug), withdrew from his squad ahead of the Qatar 2022 World Cup due to injury, and also missed the Blues' previous camp in March.
Barcelona striker Dembele was also sidelined by injury three months ago, when France kicked off their continental qualifying campaign with wins over the Netherlands 4-0 and Ireland 1-0.

Another player from the World Cup squad, defender Axel Dezazi, returns to make up for the absence of Arsenal defender William Saliba. Mendy returns for the first time since September 25, 2022, since his country's 0-2 loss to Denmark. Deschamps included veteran Olivier Giroud, 36, the country's all-time top scorer (53 goals), and Marcus Thuram in attack, but he kept Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette out despite a good end to the season for the player who has not worn the colors of France since November 14, 2017.France plays Gibraltar on June 16 in Faro, Portugal, and then hosts Greece at the Stade de France on June 19.
