Three Italian teams have reached the finals of the European Cups: Inter, Roma and Fiorentina. This is the fifth time this has happened and the last one dates back to the 1993-94 season, when the European Cups still had different names and participants. That year Milan won the European Cup final against Barcelona, Inter the Uefa Cup final against Salzburg while Parma did not make it against Arsenal in the Cup Winners' Cup, a hat-trick missed by very little.

The only European hat-trick of the Italians dates back to 1989/90 when the Rossoneri of Milan won the European Cup, Juve the UEFA Cup and Sampdoria the Cup Winners' Cup. The champions of Sacchi's Milan were reconfirmed on the roof of Europe by defeating Eriksson's Benfica with a goal by the Dutch Rijkaard; the Dorians took revenge the year before by beating Anderlecht in Gothenburg with Vialli's double in extra time. In the double final of the Uefa Cup, Zoff's Juve folded Fiorentina: victory in Turin for 3-1 and 0-0 in the return played in Avellino, an all-Italian final.

Three Italian finalists also in 1988-89, Milan in the European Cup final against Steaua Bucharest, Napoli in the Uefa Cup final against Stuttgart and Sampdoria in the Cup Winners' Cup final, the only defeat against Barcelona.

In 1992–93, Milan defeated in the European Cup final by Marseille, Juventus winning the UEFA Cup against Borussia Dortmund and Parma the Cup Winners' Cup against Antwerp.
