A bird was fatally hit by a baseball on Wednesday night on the sidelines of an official MLB game played at Coliseum Stadium in Oakland, California (United States). The game pitted the home team against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who won. It was Zac Gallen, a pitcher in the latter formation, who accidentally killed the bird, says CNN.

A fatal curveball

The scene immortalized by the cameras of Bally Sports Arizona and then widely relayed on social networks took place during the pre-game warm-up. Zac Gallen, 27, sent a curveball just as a black bird passed between him and his teammate. Commentators on the encounter said the athlete "took a little time to acknowledge" that the animal had died.

A bird had already been killed in the middle of a game after being hit by a ball thrown by an Arizona Diamondbacks player. The incident took place in March 2001 during a friendly meeting. Randy Johnson, known for the speed of his throws, had then unintentionally ended the days of a dove in a spectacular explosion of feathers.
