England international Ivan Toney of Premier League club Brentford FC has been banned for eight months for breaching the FA's betting rules.

The 27-year-old, who ranks third in the elite league's top scorers list with 20 goals, was cautioned and also received a fine of the equivalent of around 57,000 euros, the FA announced.

Toney had been indicted in 262 cases at the end of last year. The offences are said to have occurred between 2017 and 2021, when the professional was still playing for lower-class clubs.

Despite the allegations, England coach Gareth Southgate named the attacker and made his debut for the Three Lions in a 2-0 win over Ukraine in March.

Brentford announced that they would wait for the reasons for the decision before the club discussed its further course of action.
