Tadej Pogacar has just lost a compatriot in the UAE Team Emirates. Slovenian Jan Polanc officially ended his professional cycling career on Monday, at only 31 years old. The one who had especially distinguished himself by winning two stages of the Giro in 2015 and 2017 discovered a few weeks ago that he suffered from "heart problems", as announced by his team on Monday.
Former wearer of the pink jersey in 2019, Jan Polanc has indeed passed "routine examinations" in winter that revealed a problem, the nature of which was not specified by UAE. "After further examination, it was decided that the risks associated with playing high-performance sport outweighed the benefits," the UAE team said.
"It's obviously not the way I hoped to end my career," said Jan Polanc, who had not yet raced this season and was under contract until the end of the year with UAE.
