Germany's ice hockey women have surprisingly reached the quarterfinals at the World Championships in Canada. On Tuesday, the team of national coach Thomas Schädler won 2:1 (2:0, 0:1, 0:0) against Hungary at the end of the preliminary round and will now meet the top favorite USA on Thursday (19:30 at MagentaSport).
Ronja Hark (11th minute) and Nicola Eisenschmid (20th) secured the third preliminary round victory in the fourth game with their goals in Brampton. Hungary was only successful through Reka Dabasi (21st) shortly after the start of the middle section. Otherwise, the German defense with the good goalkeeper Sandra Abstreiter was safe.
Previously, Germany had already beaten Sweden (6:2) and France (3:0) and lost only to Finland (0:3). Almost more important than reaching the quarter-finals, in which Germany is a clear outsider on Thursday, is the achieved class stay – the declared goal at this World Cup. Due to structural problems in German women's ice hockey, there had previously been doubts about it.
