RB Leipzig suffered a bitter setback against FSV Mainz 05 in the fight for the Champions League places. The team of coach Marco Rose lost on Saturday with 0:3 (0:1) to FSV Mainz 05 and missed the jump into the top four of the Bundesliga. The Mainz celebrated the first victory ever in the Leipzig Arena and remain unbeaten for seven games.

Marcus Ingvartsen (9th minute) shot the guests into the lead in front of 45,597 spectators, before Ludovic Ajorque (57th) and Dominik Kohr (67th) increased. For RB it was after the 0:7 at Manchester City and the 0:1 at VfL Bochum the third defeat in a row. Again Timo Werner and Co. remained goalless. Now the Saxons, who have lost four of the last seven league games, have to fear as fifth in the table for the premier class qualification. They are two points behind the fourth-placed Freiburgers.

The zero fives showed a courageous performance right from the start. The former Mainz Rouven Schröder experienced a defeat in his first competitive game as the new RB sports director. FSV took advantage of the first chance to take the lead through Ingvartsen. Although RB goalkeeper Janis Blaswich brilliantly parried Leandro Martins Barreiro, the Dane was absolutely right and only had to push the ball in to the side. After that, Ingvartsen (25th) could have increased further. But Blaswich saved.

"We want to see you fight"

On the other side, RB woke up slowly, pushed the ball too often only across, had no depth, no pace and especially without Christopher Nkunku hardly any creativity in the game. The first shot on goal of the German Cup winner in the 23rd minute by André Silva cleared a Mainzer to the corner. FSV was still the clearly better team, had another great chance with a header from Barreiro (30th): However, the ball grazed the crossbar.

Rose stood almost motionless with folded arms and sent five professionals early to warm up. The fans acknowledged the harmless cross-pushing with whistles. Shortly before the change, Werner (41.) then had the equalizer on his feet, the national striker failed to Robin Zentner, who defended the ball in the style of a handball goalkeeper with outstretched arms and legs.

At the restart, Rose reacted, bringing in David space for Marcel Halstenberg on the left and Amadou Haidara for Kevin Kampl in defensive midfield. RB now had more game shares. When Rose with Dani Olmo (56.) just substituted the hope for the offensive, RB was caught cold again: From the half-field Barreiro flanks into the penalty area, where Ajorque (57.) with his back to the goal slipped the ball over Blaswich into the long corner.

"We want to see you fight," demanded the RB supporters. But only Mainz was able to convince. After Kohr (67.) increased with a shot from 18 meters into the right corner to 3:0, the Mainz fans danced in the stands.
