The German football champions Bayern Munich are parting ways with coach Julian Nagelsmann with immediate effect. According to media reports, among other things, the "Bild" newspaper and the "kicker" on Thursday evening, the former Bundesliga coach Thomas Tuchel is the favorite to succeed him. First, the journalist Fabrizio Romano had reported on the separation and Tuchel as a possible successor.
Nagelsmann (35) is playing the worst Bundesliga season for eleven years with Bayern. On Sunday, Munich had lost 1:2 at Bayer Leverkusen and slipped to second place behind Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga table. After the international break, there will be a direct duel with the leaders in Munich on 1 April.
Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic had publicly criticized the players after the defeat in Leverkusen and denied them mentality and commitment. In addition to the sporting problems, Nagelsmann also had to moderate numerous background noises. Recently, a mole had given Nagelsmann's Bayern tactics to the press, the coach reacted with incomprehension.
Nagelsmann had moved in the summer of 2021 for a million transfer from RB Leipzig to the Isar. In his first year, however, it was "only" enough for the championship title, in the quarter-finals of the Champions League there was the surprising exit against underdog FC Villarreal, in the DFB Cup a bitter 0:5 in the second round at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The 35-year-old's contract would actually be valid until June 30, 2026.
The 49-year-old Tuchel had won the Champions League with Chelsea FC in the summer of 2021, but had to vacate his place at the Blues in September last year. He previously worked at Paris Saint-Germain.
