Inter lose their last chance to compete for the Serie A title

Inter Milan's faint hopes of catching up at the top of Serie A were dealt a heavy blow yesterday with a shock 2-1 loss to relegation-threatened Spezia. Simone Inzaghi's side remain in second place with 50 points from 26 games, but just two points ahead of Lazio, who visit Bologna today. Napoli lead the competition with 65 points ahead of facing Atalanta.

Latter had a chance to take the lead from the penalty spot in the 14th minute but Lautaro Martinez's shot was saved by goalkeeper Bartolomé Dragowski. Spezia advanced ten minutes after the start of the second half with the first attempt on goal when Mbala outperformed down two Inter defenders inside the box before passing the ball to the unsupervised Daniel Maldini, who put the ball in the net. Inter were awarded a second penalty in the 83rd minute when Denzel Dumfries suffered a foul inside the box. Romelu Lukaku equalised from the penalty spot. He scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 87th minute. Spezia are in 17th place, six points off the relegation zone.
