Classification This is the Euroleague
"Give me 15 days to prepare a match and I'll beat any opponent."
Bobby Knight
's phrase
is the great chimera of today's basketball, where battles accumulate at an impossible rate.
This time, something rare, Real Madrid enjoyed a week to face the duel in Villeurbanne, although an asterisk would have to be put: they were planted with three considerable casualties and two of their stars spent these days traveling the world to play with their National teams.
Even so, and despite a forgettable second half, they emerged victorious against ASVEL, a team that lost their way weeks ago in the ferocious edition of this Euroleague.
[71-75: Narration and Statistics]
Without the injured
Llull, Rudy and Yabusele
, with
Deck
returning from Argentina and
Tavares
from Cape Verde -the second luckiest than the first in their adventures to qualify their countries for the World Cup-, Real Madrid played a trick on their great sunrise at the Astroballe.
What looked like a rolling pin ended up almost asking for the time.
In this Euroleague, which is facing its final stretch and in which the Whites continue to look down on almost everyone -only Olympiacos, with one more game, surpasses them in the standings-, they managed to maintain the fight for first place thanks to
Causeur
and especially to a Deck that appeared to prevent greater evils.
The 4-13 start seemed significant.
The club chaired by
Tony Parker
and whose brother TJ sits on the bench - this Friday a sciatica prevented him from being present - survives in the last places of the table, more focused on renewing his title in France before the growing strength of Monaco.
The rebound was the mainstay of a Madrid that came up with three-pointers from
Musa
and the direction of
Williams-Goss
: a spectacular
coast-to-coast
from the American closed the first half (32-47).
Of lap
Back from the changing rooms, Madrid conquered the maximum, 17 up, although the appearance of the eternal class of
De Colo
-precious his duel with his compatriot Causeur in that stretch-, the top scorer in the history of European competitions since After a few weeks he surpassed
Nikos Gallis
, he made the French re-engage in battle: in the blink of an eye he was seven (54-61).
More than one has ended up suffering his comebacks this course.
Because, a little later, in a not very encouraging nap for the purple this time, ASVEL came close to the shore (62-64, min. 33), after an overall partial of 15-30.
Little
Dee Boost, Obasohan and Jonah Matthews were unstoppable for
Chus Mateo
's perimeter
.
And in attack things weren't going too far either: in the entire second half Madrid was only able to score 27 points.
A tangle from which Madrid escaped thanks to the indefatigable Gaby Deck, for whom there are no intercontinental flights to make a dent.
Chus Mateo returned him to the track and the sky darkened again for the locals;
three consecutive baskets from the Argentine and that was over.
Although in the same outcome Madrid continued to be committed to the mess, there where, to top it off, Tavares sprained his ankle and had to go to the locker room.
Despite the last bad drink, it is the fifth straight victory for Real Madrid, the eighth in the last nine Euroleague games.
A solidity worthy of praise from a squad that is trying to leave behind the blur of the Cup that escaped in Badalona, the first title of the year.
