Three-time world champion in the 110m hurdles and U.S. Olympic runner-up Greg Foster died Sunday at the age of 64, the UCLA sports department announced Monday.

The legend of American hedgerows had been battling amyloidosis, a rare disease in which a buildup of protein causes organ damage, for several years. This disease led him to undergo a heart transplant in 2020.

After a stellar collegiate career at UCLA during which he won the national title in the 110m hurdles in 1978 and 1980, Foster won a total of 10 U.S. national titles in indoor and outdoor hurdles from 1981 to 1991.

Foster won gold in the 110m hurdles at the first three World Track and Field Championships in 1983, 1987 and 1991, in addition to a silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in his specialty.
