Hyundai will update the 'software' of four million vehicles in the US corresponding to different models of the brand that do not have an immobilizer system due to "

the increase in thefts" after the popularization on TikTok and other social networks of a method

to steal them with some ease.

The upgrade campaign will be rolled out free of charge and will begin rolling out to around one million units of

Elantra models produced from 2017-2020, Sonata from 2015-2019, and Venue models produced from 2020-2021.

The update,

which takes less than an hour to complete, will be available for all other affected vehicles from June this year

and will be carried out at Hyundai dealerships.

"Once the update is complete, stickers will be placed on the windows of each vehicle to alert potential thieves that the vehicle is equipped with enhanced anti-theft technology," the manufacturer detailed.

In the campaign,

the most popular models and those "most attacked by thieves" have been prioritized so that they are updated as soon as possible, apart from the fact that it is distributing steering wheel locks free of charge to users or tenants of the affected models.

In any case, it has defended that all its vehicles produced from November 2021 are equipped as standard with an engine immobilizer as part of its anti-theft system.

However, it also acknowledged that

certain vehicles that were manufactured between 2011 and 2022 without engine immobilizers cannot be adapted to the 'software' update

. For these customers, Hyundai is finalizing a program to reimburse them for the purchase of locks for the steering wheel and will provide you with more details in the very near future."
