On Tuesday (tomorrow) Ukraine will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the country's mass protests: known as the Revolution of Dignity, the anti-government demonstrations led to the flight of then-President Viktor Yanukovych to Russia. According to the Ukrainian Institute for National Remembrance, 107 people were killed.

Mass protests erupted after the pro-Russian president rejected a pact with the European Union in favor of close ties with Russia, which offered him a $15 billion bailout. Largely peaceful, the demonstrations turned violent after Yanukovych passed sweeping anti-protest legislation.

Despite the calamities that Ukrainians faced, this period brought profound changes, uniting the nation to a level unprecedented in its 32 years of independence.
