The German historical drama "The Empress" has won the International Emmy for Best Drama Series. The Netflix series about Austria's former Empress Elisabeth prevailed on Monday evening (local time) in New York against productions from South Korea, Argentina and Great Britain. After 2016 and the award for "Deutschland 83" at that time, it is the second time that the award in the main category of the television award for non-US productions goes to Germany.

The three other German nominees, on the other hand, came away empty-handed. "Nazi Hunters - Journey into Darkness" had to admit defeat to the documentary "Mariupol: The People's Story" about the fate of the war victims in Ukraine. "Classical Music under the Swastika - The Maestro and the Cellist of Auschwitz" as the best cultural program and "Meet... Anne Frank" as the best non-fiction programme for children could not prevail in its categories.

The International Emmys are the worldwide offshoot and the little sister of the Emmy main ceremony on January 15, which is considered the most important TV and streaming award worldwide.
