Like many leaders, Emmanuel Macron on Monday congratulated the ultra-liberal polemicist Javier Milei on his election the day before as president of Argentina. The tenant of the Élysée Palace also took the opportunity to remind him of "the importance of global issues" after controversial positions taken by his new counterpart.

In a telephone conversation, the French president stressed "the friendship, based on common values, that binds the French and Argentine peoples," the Elysée said. He also insisted "on the importance he attached to global issues, the protection of biodiversity and the energy transition, which is now essential for sustainable economic development".

Statements reminiscent of Donald Trump

Popular on TV for years, but burst into politics two years ago, Javier Milei has promised to make Argentina "a world power" again, not without recalling Donald Trump's slogans.

He became known for his controversial ideas, such as the deregulation of arms sales, his opposition to abortion and his statements on climate change, which he said was a "cycle" and not "a human responsibility".
