"The incident occurred 120 km south of the capital Parimarobo in an irregular tunnel, where at least 10 people who were looking for gold were buried," AFP quoted the country's President Chan Santokhi as telling parliament, stressing that the number of victims could increase.

Rescue teams continue to work at the site searching for the bodies of the victims, while the government has indicated it is considering options to seek help from southern neighbouring Brazil.
