A man in his twenties was fatally wounded by gunfire on Monday night in a housing estate in the working-class neighborhoods north of Marseille, AFP learned from police sources and firefighters, confirming a report by La Provence.

According to the firefighters, who confirmed the death of the victim on the spot, the incident occurred a little before 21:30 p.m. in the city of La Bricarde.

According to the daily La Provence, the man was near the city's drug outlet when he was hit by gunfire.

49 homicides this year

If the link of this new homicide with the drug trafficking that plagues the second city of France is established, it would be the 49th homicide linked to this trafficking committed in Marseille since the beginning of the year. This comes less than 48 hours after a shooting involving drug trafficking that left two people dead and three injured, two of them seriously, in a neighbouring district in the north of Marseille.

The five people, three men and two women, were shot at with Kalashnikov rifles on Saturday night while they were in a vehicle in the parking lot of a McDonald's. The two dead are a 22-year-old man, the driver, and the 25-year-old female passenger who was next to him.
