After the killing of a 79-year-old man in Mörfelden-Walldorf (Groß-Gerau district), investigators have caught a suspect. As the public prosecutor's office in Darmstadt and the police headquarters in southern Hesse announced on Thursday, a 59-year-old suspect was arrested.

The victim, who comes from Eritrea, had not returned home from a walk in the Mörfelden district on the evening of May 24. His remains were found on Whit Monday by witnesses packed in bags in the area of the Bornbruchsee in Mörfelden-Walldorf. A 20-member homicide squad, the State Office of Criminal Investigation and the public prosecutor's office investigated.

"In the course of the extensive and intensive investigations, an urgent suspicion had arisen against the 59-year-old," it said on Thursday. The man had "family ties to the victim". He was arrested on Wednesday afternoon in the Herrngarten in Darmstadt. He did not put up any resistance. Subsequently, his apartment in Mörfelden-Walldorf was searched.

On Thursday morning, the suspect was brought before an investigating judge at the district court, who issued an arrest warrant. Subsequently, the man was transferred to a correctional facility. The suspect had made use of his right to remain silent.

"The investigations into the motive for the crime as well as the numerous trace evaluations continue," said the police. The clothes of the deceased have not yet been found.
