The United Nations warned today that the humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic remains critical, and that more than three million people are in need of protection and humanitarian assistance.

The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in the Central African Republic, Mohamed Ag Ayoya, said during a press conference that 56 percent of the country's population needs humanitarian assistance, including more than two million people in urgent need of aid and their lives are at risk.

"Frequent conflicts in the country have caused population movements and lead to a volatile security situation, and one in five citizens is either displaced or seeking asylum in a neighbouring country," he said.

"The floods that swept the country last year compounded the negative situation in the country, and caused the destruction of more than six thousand homes, stressing that "there is a lack of investment in the social, economic and service infrastructure in the country.

"Basic services are generally unavailable in the country, which exacerbates the difficult living conditions of the population," Ayoya said, noting that "three out of five Central African citizens do not have access to drinking water and sanitation, and only 55 percent of children complete primary education.
