Three people were killed and several injured in an earthquake that struck southern Haiti today, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale.

The Associated Press quoted the U.S. Geological Survey as saying that "the tremor was 10 kilometers southeast of the port city of Jeremy," killing three people and injuring many.

The authorities explained that "three victims were found under the rubble of a house that collapsed as a result of the tremor, and many children were taken to hospitals after being injured," adding: "Search and rescue work is continuing in the hope of finding survivors.

The tremor comes two years after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake in the south of the country, killing more than 2200,<> people and causing extensive material damage.

Floods caused by heavy rains that swept Haiti recently killed 51 people, injured 140 others, and flooded more than 31600,<> homes, displacing thousands and severely affecting the agricultural sector in some parts of the country.
