His favorite quote:

"Objects of evil powers must not be attributed. They are not responsible for what has been done with them, they carry only the bad fortune of having been abused, trampled on, diverted from their function or the symbol they represent. It's not contagious."

Why this book?

  • Because Cathy Galliègue conveys a range of feelings through everyone: from absolute happiness to unfathomable grief. She plunges us into the hearts of her characters.
  • Because the novelist shows the indelible impact that an abusive parent can have on the lives of her children and she does so without miserabilism or voyeurism.
  • Because the book is hard, harsh, its style can be sometimes poetic and sometimes dry, as if to preserve a little of its characters from the disaster of their lives. The reader is upset.
  • Because the description of rural life rings true. Without frills, Cathy Galliègue describes a harsh countryside for its inhabitants with the temptation to leave and the need to return after leaving it.
  • Because love is shown as saving as it is destructive. Again, everything is nuanced in this book that reveals how easy it can be to ruin your life (and that of others).

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot. Solange and Gabin lived together the most beautiful love story of their lives. Their pride separated them. Will they be able to catch up for their final years?

The characters. Solange and her brother Clovis who spent their lives on the farm. Eugene, their father drunk and violent. Gabin, the great love of Solange and Marie-Christine, that of Clovis. Lison, Mother Gabin. Friends...

Places. The Haut Jura, a beautiful and wild French region.

The time. From the teenage characters to today.

The author. After living in Cayenne in French Guiana where she hosted a literary show, Cathy Calliègue moved to Burgundy with her dog and two cats naked. We owe him three novels before this one: La Nuit je mens, Et boire ma vie jusqu'à l'oubli and Contre nature.

This book was read with jagged emotions like those experienced by the characters. Revolt, resignation, joy, sadness, sorrow, happiness: I went through all this by discovering this beautiful book that transported me from its first pages.
