The motion for the arrest of independent lawmakers Yoon Kwan-seok and Lee Sung-man, who were sought for arrest warrants in the "money bag suspicion" case at last year's Democratic National Convention, was reported to the National Assembly plenary session this afternoon (30th).

The motion for arrest must be voted on within 24 hours and 72 hours from the time it is reported, and if it is not voted on within this period, it will be presented to the next plenary session for a vote.

The vote on the motion to arrest the two lawmakers will take place on the 6th of next month, when the first plenary session of the Extraordinary National Assembly will be held in June.

Earlier, the prosecution sought an arrest warrant for the two lawmakers on the 12th, and the court sent a request for consent to arrest to the prosecution the next day.

After that, the Ministry of Justice sent it to the National Assembly on 24 March after the approval of President Yoon Suk-yeol.

A sitting member of the National Assembly has the privilege of non-arrest and is not subject to arrest or detention without the consent of the National Assembly during the session.

Therefore, the motion for the arrest of the two lawmakers must be passed by the National Assembly before the court can proceed with the interrogation of the suspect before detention.

Rep. Yoon is accused of conspiring with former Representative Song Young-gil, former Korea Water Resources Corporation Standing Audit Committee member Kang Rae-gu, and others to spray a total of 26 million won to incumbent members of the Democratic Party of Korea (MDP) for Song Young-gil's election ahead of the party's convention in late April 2021.

Lee is accused of providing 4 million won to former MDP Vice Secretary General Lee Jung-geun in March 6 to run a primary camp and 2021 million won in cash to Kang and others to provide the regional headquarters for Song's election.

They voluntarily withdrew from the Democratic Party earlier this month as allegations of money envelopes spread.

The motion to arrest shall be approved if a majority of the members present approve it.

After that, the court will set a date for the questioning of the suspect before detention.

If the motion to arrest is denied, the arrest warrant will be dismissed.

Currently, the Democrats have 3 seats, which means they can be single-handedly defeated.

Therefore, the decision to approve or reject the arrest motion is likely to depend on the votes of Democratic lawmakers.

In the 100st National Assembly, Chung Jung-soon (Democratic Party) and Lee Sang-jik (Independent) · The motion to arrest lawmakers Chung Chan-min (People's Power) and Ha Young-je (People's Power) was approved, but the motion to arrest lawmakers Roh Woong-rae (Democratic Party) and Lee Jae-myung (Democratic Party) was rejected.
