Madrid-SANA

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez today called for early general elections in the country on July 23 against the backdrop of poor results obtained yesterday by the Socialist Party in municipal and regional elections, in which the right-wing opposition Popular Party dominated by an overwhelming majority.

In a statement quoted by the Spanish news agency, the Spanish prime minister said: "It is time for Spanish citizens to have their say, and I personally bear the results of this Sunday's regional and municipal elections, and for the parliament and the Senate to be dissolved in order to call early general elections in the country."

The agency added that Prime Minister Sanchez informed the Spanish king of this decision and invited the Council of Ministers to approve it and thus dissolve the parliament and the Senate.

According to the conditions set by the constitution and when the Council of Ministers meets this afternoon to approve the royal decree dissolving parliament and the Senate and calling for elections, the king must sign it to be published on Tuesday in the government's Official Gazette and enter into force on Wednesday, May 31.
