Erdogan calls for ballot box protection until last minute

Outgoing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday called for the protection of the ballot boxes until the final results, saying it was time to protect the will of our people until the last minute.

Earlier, his rival, Turkish presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu, called on voters to "vote in order to get rid of his rival's regime" after casting his vote at a polling station in the capital, Ankara.

"I call on all citizens to vote for true democracy and freedom in this country," Kılıçdaroğlu said.

He called on voters to stay near polling stations after they close, because "these elections took place in very difficult conditions."

Polls have closed in Turkey in a presidential run-off race that will decide whether Erdogan wins, or his rival Kemal Kilicidare.

There are no opinion polls once voters in Turkey leave, but preliminary results are expected within hours.
