The Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized an event today on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, at its headquarters in the capital, Santiago.

"It is necessary to note that the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people have not been duly protected or safeguarded by the international community," Wafa quoted Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren as saying, expressing concern about the ongoing occupation practices in the occupied Palestinian territories through its policy of displacement, land grabbing and annexation in the West Bank.

Van Klaveren considered that these measures impede any chance of settlement, stressing that his country will continue to support the rights of the Palestinian people guaranteed by UN resolutions until the restoration of their land and the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

For her part, the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Chile, Vera Papon, stressed that the commemoration of the Nakba is a commemoration of the world's memory that it has occurred and continues since 1948, noting that its commemoration also at the United Nations headquarters for the first time is a full recognition by the international community of the magnitude of the tragedy and injustice against the Palestinian people.

Baboun called on the international community to activate its resolutions related to the fairness of the rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, pointing out that the occupation continues its daily violations against the Palestinians, including killing, arrests, home demolitions, dispossession of land and displacement of Palestinian families, with the aim of expanding settlements at the expense of the land of the State of Palestine.

At the end of the event, a photo exhibition was opened reflecting the civilization of Palestine before, during and after the Nakba.

The event was attended by Arab ambassadors accredited to Chile, representatives of the diplomatic corps, the Chairman of the Palestinian-Chilean Friendship Committee in the Chilean Parliament, MP Jorge Brito, and a number of members of the Palestinian community.
