Japanese authorities announced the death of four people, "two women and two policemen" in a stabbing and shooting incident carried out by an armed man in Nagano Prefecture in central Japan yesterday, indicating that the attacker was arrested after a confrontation with police lasted 12 hours.

NHK quoted police as saying that the 31-year-old suspect, the son of the Nagano City Council president, was arrested at dawn today at a farm in the center of the country where he barricaded himself after shooting two policemen who arrived at the site of the reported stabbing incident.

The broadcaster said the attacker was expected to stab two women before using a hunting rifle to shoot at the two policemen who arrived at the scene of the attack in response to a distress call, and the motive for the incident is not yet known.

Five people were reported injured yesterday in an armed attack punctuated by gunfire in a populated area of central Japan.
