The Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel resigns as music director of the Paris Opera. This was announced by its artistic director Alexander Neef on Thursday in Paris. Dudamel, who is also chief conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, only took up his post in Paris in August 2021. In justifying his resignation, he stated in an official statement that he would like to spend more time with his family. He has no other plans than to be with the loved ones who help him every day to stay strong, grow and seek new challenges, both artistically and personally.

It was only at the beginning of the year, however, that it became known that Dudamel would succeed Jaap van Zweeden as chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic in the 2026/27 season. Dudamel, born in Barquisimeto in 1981, has high hopes in New York to bring the orchestra back into the top international league.
Alexander Neef declared that he accepted Dudamel's decision with a heavy heart and thanked the "immense musician" for his work on the house. For the replacement of the post, which is one of the most important in the musical life of France, Neef asked for a time of reflection so that the person could continue to guarantee the highest quality standards of performance.
