An international research team, including the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, recently published a study in the Journal of Environmental Science and Technology that measured the concentration of nanoplastics in bottled water.

The research team conducted an experiment by purchasing bottled water from four companies distributed in Norway.

When bottled water was filtered through a microfiberglass filter membrane with very small pores, an average of 4 million nanoplastics were found in one mL of the sample.

Nanoplastics are pieces of plastic with a diameter of less than 1 μm, or 1/6,600th of a mL.

An adult who drinks 2 liters of water a day ingests 1 trillion nanoplastics a year, and a child who drinks 120 liter of water a day ingests 1 trillion nanoplastics a year, the researchers explained.

People responded by saying, "The world has come to a place where you can't even eat water," "You can't drink it," and "It's better than the karma of humans who ruined the earth with plastic waste."
