The island of Guam is preparing for the worst. This territory of the United States in the Pacific awaits the arrival this Wednesday of Super Typhoon Mawar, which could cause potentially deadly coastal submersion phenomena, according to the US National Weather Service, already leading to the evacuation of the most exposed populations.

At 07 a.m. on Wednesday, Mawar was some 110 km offshore, according to the latest weather report, with winds reaching nearly 225 km/h. The typhoon "is expected to pass just south or over Guam", warned the US weather, which evokes a "triple threat" for this "super typhoon", between strong winds, "torrential rains", and "potentially lethal coastal submersion" for Guam and Rota, another American island of the Mariana Islands archipelago.

Winds of at least 140 km/h expected

Faced with these risks of coastal submersion, the authorities of Guam have ordered to evacuate the population on the waterfront of this island of nearly 170,000 inhabitants and asked everyone to "take shelter immediately" upstream of the destructive winds of 140 km / h or more that are expected as early as Wednesday morning.

"I am concerned about the safety of our people. This is the most powerful storm in 20 years," said Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero. The official called on residents to "take shelter immediately."

Already, US President Joe Biden on Tuesday declared a state of emergency for Guam so that federal aid could be provided to the island, according to a statement from the White House. Nearly 22,000 U.S. servicemen and their families are based on the island, which sees long-range bombers and U.S. nuclear attack submarines. Sixty flights from or to Guam scheduled between Tuesday and Thursday were canceled, A.B. Won Pat International Airport said.
