After the farmer she worked for decided to return to her native England, Dominique bought her estate – and its boarders – "to save animals that were destined for slaughter". Thus began the adventure of the Domaine des Douages, a place of welcome for farm animals located in Chantenay-Saint-Imbert, in the department of Nièvre.

An area supported solely by donations

But fifteen years after its creation, the estate survives only thanks to private donations. "The problem is that donations are very random," says Dominique. While my animals always have the same needs. The operating costs of the Domaine des Douages amount to 10,000 to 12,000 euros per month. We could save even more animals if we had the funds. »

The owner explains that she is constantly on the "razor's edge". But if it were to close the estate, its residents risk euthanasia. "Who can take 250 sheep today? This is what makes the domain of Douages so special. There are amazing possibilities, a beautiful place to live. There really is everything for these animals to be happy. You just need a little money," she says.
