News of the day

Russia on Tuesday opened an investigation for a "terrorist act" a day after an armed group from Ukraine incursed into Russia's Belgorod border region. While other attacks have taken place in recent weeks in this border region, this is the first to have taken on such a scale, with several villages hit by shells. This offensive also illustrates the permeability of Russian defenses.

"Steps are being taken to establish the identity of the attackers and all the circumstances of the incident," Russia's Investigative Committee, the body responsible for Russia's main investigations, said in a statement.

The phrase of the day

If we look at the reality, the figures, the context, and the fact that NATO is not ready to send troops, it is obvious that there is no victory for the poor Ukrainians on the battlefield. That's my position."

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Tuesday that Ukraine cannot win the war against Russia, pleading for negotiations with Moscow to end the conflict. The nationalist leader, who clashes with other members of the European Union (EU) over the war and refuses to help his Ukrainian neighbor militarily, reiterated his calls for a ceasefire.

Today's figure

One. The Russian authorities announced Tuesday the death of a civilian, killed in a village in the Belgorod region, targeted by an armed incursion of fighters from Ukraine and shelling that also left at least thirteen wounded.

"Unfortunately, there were still casualties. A civilian from the village of Kozinka was killed by the Ukrainian armed forces," regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram. Kozinka is one of the localities whose group of fighters claimed responsibility for the attack. And one woman died of heart failure during her evacuation.

Today's trend

Poland confirmed on Tuesday that it was ready to train Ukrainian pilots on US F-16 fighter jets, after the US gave the green light to do so.

"We are ready to train pilots on F-16 aircraft, but this training has not yet started," Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said after a meeting of EU defence ministers in Brussels on military support for Ukraine.

Several other countries intend to participate in this training effort. "We have gotten the green light from Washington for F-16 training and we are working on a concrete timeline to start training. It is important to do this as soon as possible," said Dutch Defence Minister Kajsa Ollongren.
