Rome-SANA

Italian authorities today closed Catania airport on the island of Sicily to air traffic, after a new eruption of the Atna volcano that covered the runway with volcanic ash.

The Italian agency "ANSA" quoted the airport management company as saying in a statement: flights will be suspended until safety conditions are restored.

Public broadcaster RAI reported that besides suspending flight operations at Catania airport, the town of Edrano in the city of Catania on the east coast of Sicily was also damaged, with ash covering many cars and roads.

Volcanologists have announced increased activity at Europe's highest active volcano, which stands at 3326,<> meters.

The last major eruption of the volcano was in 1992.
