Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou has entrusted Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis with forming a government after winning the election.

Local Greek media reported that Mitsotakis was given the task of forming a government in accordance with the second paragraph of Article 37 of the constitution.

Yesterday, Greece witnessed parliamentary elections in which 27 political parties, 8 alliances, and one independent candidate competed, and 9 million and 800 thousand voters participated.

Mitsotakis' ruling New Democracy party made significant progress in parliamentary elections, according to official results, with 41.1 percent of the vote, followed by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras Syriza's party with 20.01 percent.

The election comes at a time of severe economic crisis and Greeks are still reeling from the effects of harsh austerity measures, with the high cost of living and high energy prices at the forefront of the concerns of voters, who also suffer inflation of up to 10 percent last year, exacerbating living difficulties at a time when the country is saddled with a debt that accounts for 170 percent of its gross domestic product.
