"Since Mr. Kohberger decides to remain silent, I will put 'not guilty' in the proceedings." Plunged into silence, 28-year-old former doctoral student Bryan Kohberger, who is accused of killing four Idaho students in November 2022, appeared before Judge John Judge on Monday, who read him the charges against him. Now, prosecutors have 60 days to decide whether to seek the death penalty, with the trial currently set for October 2.

Bryan Kohberger, 28, was presented to a magistrate in the city of Moscow in Idaho, a crime scene that has caused a lot of excitement and speculation in the country. In the fall, he was studying for a doctorate in criminology at Washington State University, located about fifteen kilometers away.

Arrested at his parents' home on the other side of the United States

According to the indictment, he drove on 13 November to Moscow, where he broke into a university residence hall in the middle of the night. Armed with a knife, he stabbed four students aged 20 and 21: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. The investigation, widely followed in the media and on social networks, has long seemed to have stalled, with the police delivering their information in dribs and drabs.

On December 30, Bryan Kohberger, however, was arrested at his parents' home in Pennsylvania more than 4,000 kilometers away, confused according to media by traces of DNA in his vehicle.

During his first appearances, his lawyers had expressed their intention to challenge the evidence against him to have the charges quashed. But a grand jury formally indicted him for four murders, making their efforts futile.
