Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk said that US threats to Georgia after the resumption of direct flights with Russia "seem strange."

Russia Today quoted Overchuk as saying in a statement today: "The cancellation of visas for Georgian citizens to visit the Russian Federation as well as the resumption of direct flights between our two countries are purely humanitarian matters," noting that about one million Russians have links or roots in Georgia and for this reason alone Washington should have welcomed reports of the resumption of flights.

Direct between the two countries.

Overchuk stressed that the decisions taken are in line with Russia's principled approach of constantly facilitating the conditions of communication and communication between Russians and Georgians despite the absence of diplomatic relations, explaining that Georgian Airlines flights to Russia will start from tomorrow.

Earlier in the day, the United States threatened Georgian companies with sanctions if direct flights with Russia resumed, with the US State Department saying: "The resumption of air traffic between Russia and Georgia will be of growing concern to the United States and other Western countries."
