Iran has executed three men sentenced to death for participating in protests against the ayatollahs' regime sparked by the death of young Kurdish Mahsa Amini in the hands of the moral police. This was announced by the judiciary.

Majid Kazemi, Saleh Mirhashemi and Saeed Yaghoubi were convicted of "moharebeh" ("war against God") and possession of weapons during a demonstration in the central city of Isfahan, Mizan Online news agency reported.

Arrested last November, the three men were sentenced to death in January. They were also found guilty of being members of "illegal groups with the intention of undermining the security of the country and colluding with crimes against internal security," Mizan added. "According to the evidence and statements of the defendants, the firing of these three people led to the martyrdom of three members of the security forces," Mizan Online added.

The US State Department had unsuccessfully asked the authorities in Tehran to stop the executioner.

Iran has been rocked by mass protests after the death on September 16, 2022, of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, three days after she was arrested by moral police for violating the strict dress code that requires women to wear headscarves. According to Amnesty International, Iran executes more people than any other country except China.
