An 8-year-old girl died Wednesday while in Texas Border Patrol custody. The incident took place at a custody center in the border town of Harlingen in the Rio Grande Valley, near the Gulf of Mexico. This was reported by the authorities of the US Customs and Border Protection. The girl had "a medical emergency" and was taken to a nearby hospital, "where she was pronounced dead", says the note of the US authority, which did not disclose her nationality or provide further information on what happened. An investigation has been opened into the case.

Border police had 28,717 people in custody on May 10, the day before pandemic-related asylum restrictions expired, twice as many as two weeks earlier, according to a court statement.

New policies that came into effect last week on the treatment of undocumented migrants appear to have dramatically reduced entry into the United States.
