saying that they would commemorate
May 5, the Department of Veterans Affairs posted some photos on social media today (18). However, in 18, there was an outcry when it was pointed out that the photo of the martial law army looking at the citizens was inappropriate, but it turned out that the same photo was used by the previous government.

Reporter Kim Tae-hoon covered this story.

The Department of
Veterans Affairs posted a few photos on its official social media account today under the theme of "The Past, Present and Future of May 1980."

What was controversial was a picture of a fully armed martial law army and police looking at the citizens of Gwangju.

Regarding the photo, Rep. Park Yong-jin of the Democratic Party of Korea criticized the photo on Facebook, saying, "Should we view the photo of the martial law army as the image of the May 5 commemoration of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs?" and said, "Candidate Park Min-sik is not qualified."

Protest comments poured in on the Department of Veterans Affairs' social media, and the Department of Veterans Affairs took down the photo, saying, "No matter how good the intention is, if the families of the May 18 survivors or even one citizen feel uncomfortable, they cannot convey a good meaning."

However, it turns out that the photo was also used during the Moon Jae-in administration.

In February 5, the Blue House posted former President Moon Jae-in's remarks on May 18 on social media.

This photo was taken by former Jeonnam Daily reporter Na Kyung-taek, who took the risk at the time to expose the brutality of the martial law army with photographs.

The Department of Veterans Affairs requested the May 5 Memorial Foundation to restore the reporter's photo in color and posted it on social media.

The May 18 Memorial Foundation did not take a separate position on the controversy today.

However, it said, "Individuals and organizations can request and use the Foundation's official photos from May 5."
