Faisal Mekdad: President al-Assad will attend the Arab summit in Jeddah

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad confirmed to Sky News Arabia that President Bashar al-Assad will come, on Friday, to Jeddah to participate in the Arab summit.

A meeting of Arab foreign ministers kicked off on Wednesday in the Saudi city of Jeddah in preparation for the Arab summit, which will be held on Friday.

After announcing Syria's regaining its seat in the Arab League, League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit confirmed that the Syrian president could now participate in the Arab summit.

Aboul Gheit said on Sunday: "Syrian President Bashar al-Assad can participate in the summit of the League if he wishes."

The Arab League suspended Syria's membership in 2011 as war broke out.

Recently, some Arab countries have returned to dealing with Syria through high-level visits and meetings.
