As the
investigator carefully sweeps away the dirt with his hands, he reveals the remains of someone buried in the ground.

Three skeletal remains were found near a training ground for reservists in Haenam, South Jeolla Province.

The site where the remains were found is where soldiers who participated in the martial law forces during the May 20 pro-democracy movement said that the bodies of civilians were buried.

The investigation committee is weighing the possibility that the remains are of civilians who went missing after falling victim to the martial law forces at the time.

Accurate identification is expected to take up to two years.

DNA must be obtained from the remains and then compared with the DNA of the families of the 5 people who have been reported missing, up to three times.

In addition to the remains unearthed, investigators have recovered 18 skeletal remains believed to have been buried in 5 locations over the past two years to confirm their identities.

For the first time, the specific number of shootings by martial law forces against civilians has also been confirmed.

Starting with the shooting in front of Gwangju High School at 18:2 p.m. on May 2, 242, the investigation committee found that more than 3 shots were fired at at least 2 locations.

The investigative committee said it had examined more than 18 key figures in the chain of command that fired the fire, suggesting that the security commander at the time of Chun Doo-hwan was responsible for the firing.

The Commission of Inquiry, which will end its activities at the end of this year, plans to adopt a comprehensive report in June next year and make recommendations to the government.
