"It was incredibly unlucky but incredibly lucky to capture him." On Friday, a man fishing aboard a kayak off the coast of Hawaii (United States) was attacked by a shark. The scene was filmed by his GoPro camera that he had used to record his fishing trip, ABC News and CBS News report, relaying KITV.

"I heard a breath sound that sounded like a boat heading towards me without an engine, I looked up and saw this big, wide brown thing that my brain thought was a turtle. But then I was attacked by her and realized it was a tiger shark," Scott Haraguchi, the fisherman, told KITV. On the video, published this Monday on YouTube, we see the beast emerge and close its mouth on the kayak.

The shark mistook it for a seal

The images show the man kicking the shark, which eventually returns to the water. According to him, the shark mistook him for a seal. Scott Haraguchi had noticed an injured seal nearby. He assumed that the shark must have attacked him a little earlier and then returned to the charge. Except he went after the wrong target.

"I realize life is short, time is short on earth, make the most of it, be kind to people," Haraguchi said after the incident. According to ABC News, shark attacks remain rare in the United States. Hawaii's Division of Aquatic Resources has recorded four shark attacks on the islands since the beginning of 2023.
