The compensation requested this Monday by the Canal Plus group from a farm worker in Loudun, in the Vienne, for a computer hacking is colossal since it amounts to more than 7 million euros. The New Republic specifies that the group claims this sum for the online posting of its content via a streaming website between 2019 and 2020.

Battle over the audiences of online content

The amount of the damage is calculated in particular on the basis of a Médiamétrie survey which recorded 1.495 million unique visits to the site in just over a year. It also takes the monthly cost of a subscription (109 euros) and "it is weighted by the penetration rate of Canal + estimated at 15%," says La Nouvelle République. Canal+ also claims 15,000 euros for moral damage and nearly 30,000 euros which would correspond to the advertising benefits for the hacker.

For its part, the council of the agricultural worker questions the supposed audiences of the content put online by his client and denounces a delusional amount.

The court will issue its decision in this case on September 18, 2023.
