The top of the Russian military hierarchy suffers as much as the rest of the troops. Two officials were killed on the front line in Ukraine, Russia announces. Colonels Vyacheslav Makarov and Yevgeny Brovko died "heroically" in Ukraine, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said at a daily briefing.

According to the spokesman, Vyacheslav Makarov, commander of the 4th Motorized Rifle Brigade, repelled with his men "two enemy attacks" before being "seriously wounded and dying during his evacuation from the battlefield". Yevgeny Brovko, deputy commander of the army corps "in charge of military-political work", died on the Ukrainian front "after receiving multiple shrapnel wounds".

Such communication from the Russian military is particularly rare and reflects the intensification of fighting in recent days, as Moscow says it has repelled a Ukrainian assault on a 95-kilometer long front in eastern Ukraine. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, "over the past day, the enemy has made massive attempts to break through the defense of our troops, north and south" of Bakhmut.
